Macaulay is committed to promoting early literacy skills in children and in supporting parents, caregivers and the community to do the same.

With support from the Atkinson Charitable Foundation, Macaulay developed a family literacy curriculum. This curriculum for adults and children promotes the development of literacy readiness skills in children 0-5 years. It is called “From Lullabies to Literacy: Building Foundations for Learning.”

The curriculum can be used with individuals or groups. It may be delivered as a multi-week program or individually as single session workshops.

For Community agencies, the curriculum provides a complete package of information and activities to deliver the program, including discussion guides, hand outs, recommended strategies and much more.

For parents and caregivers, the curriculum is a rich store of everyday activities that can be used to promote early literacy skills.

The curriculum was professionally evaluated, and found to enhance:

  • speech and language development and emergent literacy skills in children, and
  • parent/caregiver confidence and knowledge of strategies for supporting children’s literacy development.
  • participation among children and adults in community related literacy activities.

“From Lullabies to Literacy” covers the following topics:

  • Building self-esteem
  • Talking and listening
  • Songs and rhymes
  • Sounds of the alphabet
  • Storytelling
  • Sharing books with children
  • Reading together
  • Drawing and writing
  • Sounds and words in our world

Macaulay provides training to service providers on how to implement the Lullabies to Literacy curriculum.
