Barbershop Project

Macaulay partners with Barbers and Black community leaders to offer More than a Haircut: The Barbershop Project.

Since February 2006, with funding from United Way, regular facilitated conversations with Afro-Caribbean fathers have been held in three barbershops in the Eglinton Oakwood neighbourhood. The purpose of these discussions is to increase positive father involvement in children’s development.

The sessions always brim with lively conversation about important issues of concern to Black fathers, such as teaching and reinforcing a positive cultural identity, or guiding children’s behaviour. At the sessions refreshments and resources are available, and there may also be a skit, a video clip, or a spoken word performance to inspire thinking and discussion.

For a look at some themes of the discussions, download a copy of Black Fatherhood on Fathering: Tips from the Barbershop.
